Pupils need to be able to work efficiently and confidently when calculating. Using standard algorithms isn’t always the most efficient way to calculate an answer.
Rather, pupils use to need number sense to decide what is the best way to carry out a particular calculation and then use estimates to check whether their answer is reasonable.
These cards can be attached around the playground or the hall/classroom if it is raining. Pupils can start at different points on the trail since the cards form a loop where the answer to one card is written on a different card.
Working in pairs encourages discussion and justification for methods and ideas.
