Often students add and subtract decimals by lining up the decimal points and using the standard algorithms. This strategy may produce the right answer, but doesn’t always support students in developing their understanding of place value.
The questions in this BINGO game are designed to encourage the use of alternate strategies to add and subtract decimals to the hundredths place, including using benchmark decimals, numberlines and money as a model.
This video preview goes into a bit more depth on what is included and how I used in with my students to build understanding of place value and mental math strategies: Decimal Addition and Subtraction Bingo Video Preview
