This lesson breaks down decimal expanded form in a way that students are sure to master it! It gives kids plenty of opportunities to practice and slowly builds in difficulty so that all students are challenged and feel successful.
The guided notes start with teacher-lead examples, then gives kids a practice set to do with a partner, and finally gives them 3 levels of independent practice. After kids have had enough practice, there is an exit quiz included to make sure they've got it down!
The lesson covers both types of expanded form:
-type 1: 4.56 = 4 + 0.5 + 0.06
-type 2: 4.56 = (4 x 1) + (5 x 1/10) + (6 x 1/100)
This product includes:
-Teacher Lead Problem Set
-Partner Practice Problem Set
-2 pages of Independent Practice, slowly building in difficulty
-A challenge page that includes mixed decimal review for early finishers
-Answer keys for everything!
This lesson aligns perfectly with 5.NBT.3a, so is designed for 5th grade but could also be taught in 4th or 6th depending on the needs of your students.
