This fun, 15 student-page,
place value and decimal operations project is not just aligned to the common core, it was created for the common core. We looked at every 5th grade NBT standard and some MD standards while designing this packet for our students. Most 4th & 6th grade standards are represented as well. Students will love the challenging questions that make them think and conceptualize the common core state standards.
The work in the packet does not only ask students to use algorithms, but also asks them to logically comprehend and make sense of real-world problems. Using the storyline of a summer camp and putting them in the role of camp counselors keeps the students engaged and motivated to use and understand place value, decimal operations and measurement in a real-world way. We had our students complete the packet prior to finishing the unit on NBT standards, which allowed them the rigor and struggle that is so important for our students. It is kid tested and approved!
Possible Uses in the Classroom
Many pages can be used as performance tasks as well, or as formative assessments. Doing these with our students allowed us many opportunities to check in with them to ensure understanding. It was a great way for students to work at her own pace, and differentiation came naturally, as we were able to do daily one-on-one and small group teaching, while the rest of the class was happily engaged in the project. This happened authentically, and we repeatedly had opportunities to teach and reteach for individual needs. There were countless "ah ha" moments...a teacher's favorite sound! This makes an excellent packet for earlier finishers, as well as, for homeschool students
of various ages or grades.
Our students loved working in this packet! They found it to be engaging and especially fun to work on in pairs or small groups. Because it includes practice in all of the 5th grade CCSS, most 4th grade and some 6th grade standards this packet is entirely appropriate for all three grades and can be used in many different ways!
″ Performance assessment(s)
″ Review for unit test or state tests
″ As early finisher work
″ As enrichment
″ for an independent small group
″ For home school study
″ As a whole class –because the problems are designed for multiple solution paths, every problem provides a great opportunity for students to share how they approached the problem and arrived at a solution.
Many of the scenarios intentionally include dividing and multiplying by 10 to bring attention to the pattern of the number of zeroes when multiplying by 10 and the pattern of placement of the decimal point when multiplying or dividing.
″ Place value to millions
″ Place value to thousandths
″ Read and compare decimal numbers
″ Create numbers 10 times larger or 10 times smaller than a number
″ Tiling to find area and perimeter of rectangles with fractional sides
″ Round decimals
″ Decimal computation: add, subtract, multiply and divide
″ Convert among different-sized standard measurement (pounds and ounces)
″ Shop to calculate quantities, prices and totals
