Sometimes it is just more fun to do a project than a test! This formative assessment tests skills of adding and subtracting decimals as well as being able to keep track of a ledger or check register as a part of the new financial literacy TEKS aligned with math in Texas.
Each student is able to go on a virtual shopping spree with no budget and buy 4 items that they truly want. They must complete a statement for each item that they purchase with the name of the item as well as the cost. The students are then able to either illustrate or attach a picture of each item in their Shopping Spree book. Once all items have been purchased, it's now time to fill out the ledger to ledger of purchases. This shows students adding totals of various items as well as keeping track of a running balance of how much they have spent.
My students were actively engaged in this product for two class periods (45 minutes each) and enjoyed being able to demonstrate their skills through a real-life project rather than a paper/pencil assessment.
Student samples are included and you may check out my blog post for more information.
