The elves are better at making toys than they are at doing math. Here, they’ve made 12 mistakes when adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing decimals. It’s up to your students to help them find their mistakes and correct the problems.
Copy the answer recording sheet 1 – 6 front-to-back with the answer recording sheet 7 – 12. The first column is where students will write their analysis of what the elf did wrong. The second column is where the student will correctly solve the problem.
Print the cards on cardstock to laminate and keep as a center.
Make class sets of black and white copies, cut apart, and give out one each day for twelve days either for morning work, bell-ringer, or homework. Students will record their responses each day.
Error analysis is a key component to many state standardized tests. Prepare your students by having them really think about what errors occurred. This takes math to a whole new level!
