Show, Just Don’t Tell: Decimals is an activity that reinforces that there are multiple ways to represent decimals. Students can SHOW a decimal on a number line, with manipulatives, in word form, or as a fraction/mixed number. Students choose a decimal card and then roll a number cube to determine which way to represent the decimal. In some cases, there is no one right answer so it allows for multiple entry points of learning.
Varying the place value used is one way to differentiate learning for students. The 92 decimal cards are differentiated by frame color: tenths (20 cards), hundredths (36 cards), thousandths (36 cards).
Students show their work on a recording sheet. There are three versions of the recording sheet.
♦ Version 1 can be used for practice in a group setting.
♦ Version 2 can be used for students to reflect on their learning with a student checklist.
♦ Version 3 can be used for a formative assessment with a five point rubric.
Note: The decimal cards can be used for other tasks involving comparing decimals or ordering decimals.

A word bank of number words and decimal place value is included to support learners with vocabulary. Two example pages are included to help model the expectations of the activity for students. Using place value blocks to represent decimals is included on the Action Boards. An alternative is to use the blackline master of place value blocks that is included where students can shade in the decimal representation.
This activity can be used to differentiate instruction for fourth grade students ready to learn decimals. It can be used to complement core instruction in fifth grade. Sixth grade students may benefit from this activity to remediate, review, or reinforce key decimal concepts.
