Your students have a chance to become competitors in some classroom Olympic events! Each group will time each other completing three different simple events (saying a sentence, snapping 15 times, and spelling a word). They will record their times in seconds-milliseconds on the recording sheet. They will practice writing their mixed number in standard form, expanded form, word form, fractional form, and coloring it in on a decimal grid. Once all three events are completed, competitors will decide together, based on the times, who received the gold, silver, and bronze medals for each event. The activity also contains four follow-up open-ended questions. There are also two extension questions and an extension activity for higher students or students who finish the activity early. The only extra materials needed for this activity are timers for the groups. If you do not have enough timers for each group, this activity could also be done in centers or guided math groups.
