Texas TEKS 4.4A
As a child I played 'city' where each of my friends had a business. We spent hours buying and selling with our fake money. I created LET'S GO SHOPPING as an interactive activity where students buy and sell. It should be very easy for you to set up and kids will LOVE playing city.
Each student has a business with five items to sell. They price their items using the pricing guide and some place value math skills! It is very interactive and requires kiddos to use their adding/subtracting skills.
TEACHER SET UP
-Make two copies of each store page
-Organize your students into partners. Each set of partners will run a store at their desk or table and have 5 products to sell. Have them cut out the products and arrange them on their desk. (EXTEND: Create a store name, logo, or advertisement.)
STUDENT SET UP
-Pricing: Partners work together to price their products using the Pricing criteria. This is good practice with place value. :) Since each student will have their own store sheet, their pricing does not have to be the same. Partners are able to check the accuracy of each other’s pricing.
-Cut out each product and display on desk/table. They also cut out the registrar.
-While Partner A is tending the shop, his/her products are for sale.
-One partner will ‘tend the shop’ while the other partner shops. Each purchase and sell needs to be recorded in the registrar (practice adding and subtracting decimals).
-If a consumer purchases a product, he or she takes the’ product’.
-Time each shopping session (10 min?). Allow multiple shopping sessions.
-For one session, you can say that all stores have a half price sale. ;)
- I included additional registrars and a summary page.
