Students get involved in this practical exercise since it's about them and their future. Given wage and benefit details, they have 5 minutes to accept/reject a job and justify their choice. Life skill decisions about moving, accommodation, essentials vs. non-essentials, transportation to work and more are made whether the job was accepted/rejected. Calculations are extended to an annual basis. Final phase involves deducting income tax and other expenses, reducing net take home pay. Students experience firsthand the ease of going in the red and the challenge of staying in the black. Provided as a Word.rtf document to enable changes to your situation. Researched/developed for gr. 10 CAREERS course in Ontario using Toronto Star for Classifieds to find accommodation, but easily adaptable. Teacher info sheet included. Newspapers or online research recommended for life skills info. Update Feb. 22/2016:
Consider adapting this from newspaper format to a research exercise on the web, but identify a specified location (city) for the job within your province or state.
