Essay writing can be challenging. Encourage students to start writing by using this activity! This activity is a fun and simple way to get students to create their outlines. It takes pressure off students and give them and you realistic writing goals. Piece by piece you will notice their essays come together into one cohesive and fluid work. This is a much easier way to approach writing rather than expecting students to crank out an entire essay the night before.
I used this activity with students who were ready to write their research essays.
This tool also exposes students to essay writing language (i.e: thesis statement, topic sentences, conclusion, introduction, transitions). This worked very well with English Learners.
I distributed a sheet to each student. I gave each student a deck of cards. I split up the decks and gave each student cards that ranged from Ace through King.
