This is an assignment that asks the students to summarize the Declaration of Independence in their own words. (In my class, the students have already completed a children's book group activity, so they have extensive background knowledge of the document already.)
I have included a graphic organizer, which brings the students through the document step by step and shows them how to organize their essay (which is also great for special populations students.) The organizer is especially helpful since this is an assignment used at the beginning of the year, and the students need a little bit more help with the organization of their essays. Also included is a rubric.
This assessment meets more than one MA DESE Common Core Standard for History/Social Studies. It asks students to draw evidence from informational texts to analyze, as well as write informative/explanatory texts.
