Declaration of Independence Introductory Lesson Plan
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in American history. A great deal of hardship and strife led up to its conception and the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. This introductory activity is aimed at helping students understand how these pieces came together to inspire America’s colonist to declare independence from England.
Students will watch a video and read a variety of informational texts to familiarize themselves with the events prior to the American Revolution. Using a Cause and Effect handout, they will chart the causes and subsequent effects of each event they research. Finally, students will use the Cause and Effect chart as a resource to write a miniature essay explaining how events intertwined to cause the colonies to declare independence.
This lesson is Common Core aligned and uses a Marzano inspired grading scale.
