Your students will love this active review of the grievances in the Declaration of Independence.
This activity uses the original text of the Declaration of Independence, so it is most appropriate for students in 5th grade and above. You may consider providing dictionaries. However, students will often be able to ascertain the meaning of a grievance from the context or from previous instruction.
I have conducted this activity in a whole-class situation and in cooperative groups. It works well either way.
1. Copy one activity sheet for each student in your class. Be sure to use all of the sheets at least once or twice to ensure there will be a variety of grievances for students to discuss.
2. Students will find a classmate with a matching grievance. The pair will discuss the grievance. They will then write the grievance in modern language OR explain why the colonists were outraged at this act by the British.
3. The students will thank one another and then find another classmate with a matching grievance.
