This printable contains a set of cards with both original phrases from the Declaration of Independence and a set with the same phrases written in student friendly language. The cards also contain a visual to go along with the phrase. These are perfect for ESL students, struggling readers, and kinesthetic learners. These cards can be used as part of a station, word wall, or cooperative learning activity. They are also a great way to introduce and preview this primary source document.
These cards can be used in a variety of different ways:
-have students sort phrases according to which section of the DOI they belong to (preamble, grievances statement of separation)
-students can play a matching game, matching the original phrase to the student friendly phrase
-Students can play an "I have who has game" where each student is given a card and they need to find the student who has their phrase
-As a scavenger hunt activity where students are given the student friendly phrase and tasked with finding the original phrase in the document
-To analyze similarities and differences with other government documents, hand out the cards and have students find phrases that are similar in meaning to the one on their card
Feel free to share in the feedback the creative ways you have used these cards in your classroom.
