This publication contains fluency practice sheets and a game to decode single closed syllable words (with 3 sounds).
The first four sections are fluency practice sheets:
Section 1: Group I phonograms/graphemes: a, b, f, h, I, j, k, m, p, and t
Section 2: Group II phonograms/graphemes: c, d, e, g, l, n, o, r, s, u, ch, sh, and th
Section 3: Group III phonograms/graphemes: qu, v, w, wh, x, y, and z
Section 4: Double consonants: ff, ll, ss, zz, including words ending in –all and –oll.
Each page comprises:
• real and nonsense closed one-syllable words featuring a specific phonogram/grapheme
• three sentences with some of these real words plus sight words
Section 1 includes real and nonsense CVC words using Group I phonograms only.
Section 2 includes real and nonsense CVC words with the featured Group II phonogram along with Group I phonograms and then with phonograms from Group I and II.
Section 3 includes real and nonsense CVC words that combine the featured phonogram with first Group I phonograms, then Group I and II phonograms, and then with Group I, II, and III phonograms.
Section 4 includes sing-syllable words that end in a double consonant and use phonograms/graphemes from Groups I-III.
Students may repeatedly read any or all the real and nonsense words and/or the sentences. Research shows that repeated reading aids fluency. These sheets may be especially useful for teachers using the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction with older struggling readers.
Finally, a fun board game, Fun Run! is included so that students may review the consonants and vowels found in the closed syllable words of this publication.
