Decode! booklets have already introduced closed, open silent-e, and consonant-le syllables. This publication introduces a new syllable type, the r-controlled syllable. An r-controlled syllable is one with a vowel followed by the letter r. The presence of the r controls the sound of the vowel. The special vowel sound is neither a long nor short vowel sound.
Decode! Book 7 contains the following sections:
Fluency practice sheets for one- and multi-syllable words that contain r-controlled syllables.
Fluency practice sheets for words that contain the phonograms (graphemes) soft c and g, ph, dge, and tch.
Most pages in sections 1 and 2 comprise:
* A key word/illustration for the phonogram (grapheme);
* Words featuring the phonogram;
* Sentences including words with the featured phonogram.
Students are encouraged to repeatedly read any or all of the words and sentences. Research shows that repeated reading aids fluency. These sheets may be especially useful for teachers using the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction with older struggling readers.
Seven worksheets are provided that explore the spelling generalizations of soft c and g; dge and ge; and tch. Answers are included at the end of the booklet.
Eight fluency passages comprising controlled texts that feature r-controlled syllables and words with the featured phonograms soft c and g, ph, dge, and tch. A student may read these passages to demonstrate mastery.
Finally, a fun board game, HARVEST FROM GARDEN TO MARKET, is included so that students may review reading words and test their grasp of the spelling generalizations featured in the publication.
