The goal of this Color-by-Word activity is to provide advanced decoding practice in pronunciation patterns not usually addressed in early-grade phonics. These skills are necessary to decode larger multisyllabic words.
Learning to see and knowing how to pronounce these recurring patterns greatly enhances readers’ ability to tackle more advanced reading levels - particularly RL 4.0 and above.
This activity may be useful for advanced second or third grade readers, crucial for fourth grade through middle school readers, and beneficial for struggling secondary readers.
This activity provides practice in the specific skill of the 5 spellings of the “SH” SOUND that advanced readers need to know. The most common spelling readers encounter – and the one taught in the early grades is “sh.” As readers progress in their knowledge of word patterns found in multisyllabic words, they learn of 4 additional spellings of the “SH” sound: “ci”, “ti,” “si,” and “ch.”
