Explicitly teach your students advanced decoding using word parts in multisyllabic words. This handbook can be used in a year-long program to strengthen your students’ fluency and decoding abilities. Readers will gain confidence as they tackle the demands of increased reading levels. As their ability to decode multisyllable words increases, students gain pride and eagerness to continue reading.
This product is a resource for teachers to use as they teach each word part to their class or small group. It is a part of the TEACHING strand of the "I Can Read GIGANTIC Words" program to teach your readers to decode multisyllabic words. No activities are included in this handbook resource.
Familiarity with the individual parts of multisyllabic words is a crucial component of the advanced decoding ability necessary in the intermediate grades and above.
Learning to see and knowing how to pronounce these recurring word parts (prefixes, suffixes and bases/roots) (as well as small, already-known words hidden inside large, many-syllable words) greatly enhances readers’ ability to tackle more advanced reading levels - particularly RL 4.0 and above.
Readers will add these word parts to their sight word memory and learn to recognize them as they encounter new multisyllabic words. Utilizing their knowledge of word parts, rather than sounding out each letter saves readers significant time, stress and opportunity for the process to break down. Reading a many-letter word requires identifying, remembering, sequencing and blending all of the units into a whole. (And then the meaning/comprehension work begins!)
This program is helpful for advanced third grade readers, crucial for fourth grade through middle school readers, and beneficial for struggling secondary readers. I’ve also used this program in second grade.
Recommended process: introduce one or more word part each day. Whole-group: find and record sample words as guided practice. Students then find and record additional words that contain the word part using their independent reading.
PLEASE NOTE: this program is designed to reinforce advanced decoding instruction through recognition of multisyllabic word parts – prefixes, suffixes and bases/roots. It does not provide practice on their meanings. Students do NOT need to know, understand or remember the meanings of all the words in order to benefit from this activity!
This activity is designed to complement advanced-decoding instruction you already have in place.
