Decoding strategies are essential foundational skills for all readers! This card features self-monitoring strategies that will help readers figure out what to do when they get to an unknown word. Kids need actionable steps in order to help themselves. This card could be introduced after all the strategies have been taught. This strategy card is perfect for printing, laminating, and distributing to your kids. This would work well in a small group or when your kids are independently reading or re-reading a familiar text.
There are two styles here; one has a black background and the other has a colored background. Once kids have been taught the strategies for figuring out unknown words, then they can use this card as a visual when they get stuck. We want our kids to be independent readers and thinkers.
The strategies are as follows:
flip the letter sound
skip the unknown word
get your mouth ready to say the first sound
use the picture clues
backtrack and read it again
read through the word
take off the ending
use a word you know
look for parts you know
break the word apart
And then the three cueing system questions; Does it look right, Does it sound right, and Does it make sense?
Finally, ask all three.
This card has visuals that illustrate the strategy and are useful for all learners.
This would also be great to give parents so that they can help their kids at home.
Thanks for stopping by!
