Decoding ~ The Strategy Sticks Way
A Fun Way to Help Struggling Readers
I love using these never fail, tried and true decoding strategies in guided reading. Hanging posters on the wall made my wall looked great, but it didn’t get the strategies in the hands of my kids where they belonged. That’s why I created these “Strategy Sticks.” I wanted the strategies to be closer to my students and to be there in a fun way for them. I know that any time I have something that they can touch and manipulate, that they are much more likely to use it. I also didn’t like taking the posters off of the wall to use them and putting them back on when I was finished.
The matching posters will look nice on the wall and they might use them, but the stick will be in their hands or in mine.
As they are reading along and they begin to struggle, they can look up at me and I will have a strategy stick ready to cue them on the next step. After some practice, it won’t take them long to start grabbing their own Strategy Stick when they are struggling.
Maybe other students will start offering a strategy stick instead of offering the word.
