I give my students a bag of counters. They use the counters to make their number and then draw what they made. Each sheet allows students to make the number in 4 different ways. This took a lot of guidance at the beginning, but they are doing it independently now! While they work, I ask them to explain what they made (2 red counters and 3 yellow counters makes 5 counters altogether!) When I recently tested my kindergarteners after using these pages, I found that 100% of my students could successfully decompose numbers and explain their thinking.
