This is a 2nd-3rd grade unit devoted to understanding the process of decomposition and its impact on living things. It culminates with a pumpkin carving day followed by a contest to see which pumpkin rots the fastest. Although it is geared towards 2nd and 3rd, it can easily be adjusted for Kindergarten and 1st grade. It includes literature, science, vocabulary, oral speaking practice, writing, and grammar (adjectives). It is an excellent lesson for combining Halloween with Science.
The lesson can last three to five weeks, but is organized by days of instruction necessary.
