This is a handout used to illustrate media literacy concepts, particularly how women are viewed by mainstream media. This handout is used in conjunction with magazines that the students bring in from their lives. They then go through the magazines in class or as homework, and find examples of ads that fit into these categories. The teacher can find ads first to illustrate the point of each of the categories. This exercise is about getting students to think below the surface of advertising to the real message, and to what they are really being sold within social construction.
