Inference is key to reader comprehension, so it’s part of the foundation of making meaning. In putting together this bundle, I look

Students often associate poetry with romance. Such topics don't appeal to all readers. For this reason, I've been working to diversify the topics discussed in the poetry my students read in class.

But don't let that fool you: Judson Jerome's "Deer Hunt" is not really about hunting. In this brutal poem, Jerome uses violence and imagery to provide commentary on masculinity and self-destruction. This poem is a great tool for teaching inference, point of view, imagery, and symbolism.

  • Includes Inference Questions with Pre- and Post-Reading Activities
  • Includes Analysis Questions with Pre- and Post-Reading Activities
  • Includes an Extension Activity and Rubric

Plus, the questions are also available as self-grading, ready-to-customize Google Forms. Everything is also available in a Google Slides, so you have access to a digital copy that you can share with students today!

BUT WAIT...To help you teach these skills in your room, I have bundled together my five favorite poems for helping 9-10 students work on inference. The 9-10 Poetry Inference Bundle Includes:

Since these poems provide opportunities for students at all levels, I've included several tools to help you reach all learners. Each poem features

  • Inference questions
  • Analysis questions
  • An extension activity
  • Graphic organizer and/or rubric
  • All of the questions are available in self-grading, fully customizable Google Forms that you can share with students today.
  • I've also included a Google Slides for each resource so you can go paperless!

As a bundle *bonus*, I have included 8 synthesis writing prompts! The last three poems feature similar situations and symbols, so they provide a great opportunity for synthesis thinking. Along with the writing prompts, you will find an easy-to-use constructed response rubric.

If you were to purchase each item individually, you'd spend $15. But with the bundle, you'll save three dollars, which is like getting one of these resources for free!

This pairs perfectly with the 11-12 Inference Poetry Bundle, which focuses more heavily on deliberate ambiguity, imperfect resolution, syntax, and shifting point of view. Check out the poems it includes:

SAVE MORE! Get both the 9-10 and 11-12 Poetry Inference Bundles for one great price! All together, this bundle provides 10 poems, 22 synthesis prompts, and 100+ pages! With poems for 9-10 and 11-12, teachers have the ability to meet any high school student at any level. These tools can be used for whole group practice and modeling, during guided reading, as homework, independent practice, or at literacy stations!

If you were to purchase each bundle individually, you'd spend $30. However, by purchasing these bundles together, you save $10, which is like getting three poem kits for free!
