This PowerPoint presentation, RL.4.6 Defending Point of View, teaches students to determine point of view and defend it in a paragraph.
Determining and defending point of view are modeled through analysis of two short conversations (one written in first person and the other in third person). For each text, students name the characters and decide whether any of them are telling the story. Steps for writing a strong topic sentence and defending the point of view with evidence from the text are then modeled.
A complete set of lesson plans, RL.4.6 Determining and Defending Point of View Lesson Plans
, is also available. It includes two PowerPoint presentations, guided practice, worksheets for practice determining point of view, three excerpts (each adapted for three reading levels) for practice determining and defending point of view in a paragraph, an additional excerpt for assessment, and a rubric.
