What was Manifest Destiny? In this lesson, students read excerpts from John O'Sullivan's "A Great Nation of the Future" and John Gast's painting, "American Progress." Students will examine Manifest Destiny, the idea that dictated US economic/political/social policies throughout the 1800s, using these two primary sources. Students will also brainstorm the costs and benefits of Manifest Destiny. This lesson serves as a good opener for the post-founding documents unit in a US History course.
