Degenerate art (German: Entartete Kunst) was the Nazis' way of describing Modern art. They confiscated the art supposedly for being un-German, Jewish, or Communist. In reality, some felt in the post war era that was just an excuse to grab the art, sell it and use the proceeds to fund the German war machine in WWII. This is exactly what Hitler and Gobbels did with "Degenerate Art." Roughly forty years later, "degenerate" artist Robert Mapplethorpe's work was the subject of an obscenity trial in America. The prosecution failed to prove its case and the first amendment protection of art triumphed. Compare these two similar yet opposite-results cases in this presentation.

The font developed by the German Bauhaus school is used in the presentation. It is a lower case font. The Nazis closed this excellent art school with many of its artists and teachers fleeing for protection to America.
