Developing a deep understanding of unit vocabulary is a key component of successful learning outcomes in Social Studies. This unit provides 6 levels of tasks based on Robert Marzano's (2004) research on the process for vocabulary instruction for 20 key terms in the 3rd Grade Georgia SS unit: Roots of Democracy - A Comparative study of Ancient Greece. While this unit is based on GA Social Studies standards, it should be useful with any comparative study on modern and ancient democracy.
Vocabulary Tasks include:
-6 Close Reading of a Picture Tasks using photographs related to the unit (introduction of terms)
- KIM Map (organizer for students to describe the term in their own words)
-Concept Sort (interactive notebook task)
-Think Dots (interactive notebook task) - 2 Levels for Transitional and Fluent Readers
-Writing R.A.F.T. (Interactive notebook task) - 2 Levels for Transitional and Fluent Readers
-Fours A Crowd Word Debate (student pair or small group discussion)
-I Have, Who Has Vocabulary Game (review activity)
