Understanding the complex differences between the Democrat and Republican parties can be a challenge for adults, let along middle school and high school students. This activity is a great analysis activity to end your study of political parties with. Students will read eight different 1 paragraph bios that describe eight different politicians. They will use what they know about the political parties to decide if that politician represents the Republican party or the Democrat party. They will then provide evidence from the card in order to support their answer. This typically takes about 30 minutes for students to complete. As an extension activity, I have students who finish early write a bio about a politician who belongs to different third parties. My students really loved this activity and were engaged in complex discussion without even knowing it!
