These are 11 of several possible democratic ideals of the United States. My team and I use these throughout the school year to discuss with our students the conflict between democratic ideals and reality in US history.
For example, in our World War I unit we will discuss the democratic ideals President Wilson was trying to achieve through the 14 Point Speech, and the reality that occurred because of the Treaty of Versailles.
We started the year off by going over these democratic ideals with students. These definitions are based on their understanding, and are written in "kid-friendly" terms.
