Introduce students to the two main political parties after the constitution was ratified (the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans). Students read about how the two groups interpreted the constitution in different ways, specifically in how they read the elastic clause. In order to learn about the point of view for both groups on two issues (the National Bank and the U.S. involvement in the French Revolution), students read the lyrics from two Hamilton songs. In the lesson the students read the lyrics and answer a series of questions about the historical facts embedded within the lyrics. Finally, students use the information from the lyrics to determine which political party they would join.
