This is a must use lab activity for middle school science. Students compare Coke and Diet Coke, make some observations of a unique event. They propose two theories to explain what they see and analyze the ingredient lists. Based on their data and observations, they draw conclusions. This can be used to reinforce science process, introduce density, or just have some fun on those days that are dragging. All you need is a can of Coke, Diet Coke, a balance and a container to float it in.
