In this S.T.E.A.M. / S.T.E.M. and project based learning activity, students get to experiment with density by creating a boat that floats and holds pennies.
Included are two pages of student handouts (PDF), a teacher lesson guide (PDF), and an editable powerpoint with background information on density and to guide the lesson.
Materials required: A large container of water, scale, rulers, scissors, pennies (or other objects to place in the boats), and an assortment of materials to build the boats.
Students build a boat, see how many pennies it can hold and float, make calculations involving mass and volume, and make predictions based on density of the boat compared with water.
