The regular pop vs. diet pop demonstration is an excellent demonstration for students to learn about density.
How dense an object is can be calculated by using the density equation: Density = Mass divided by Volume. The density of water is 1.0 grams per milliliter. Any object that has a density greater than 1.0 g/mL will sink and any object with a density of less than 1.0 g/mL will float. In this demonstration, the volume of the cans of pop are the same which means the mass of the liquids must be different.
