This is the ultimate resource for studying the density of liquids and solutions. There is a lot of science using graduated cylinder and triple beam balances to prepare sugar solutions of different densities, not to mention that middle school students really enjoy making and layering the colored sugar solutions. Three different methods of making the sugar solutions are described, one made by the teacher and two by the students. Different techniques to layer the solutions are described in cups, graduated cylinders, test tube and straws. Because there are so many variations, the activities in this packet can be run over 3, 4 or even more classes.
How many different liquid layers are possible? A list of liquids is provide to make layers of 10 and more. Challenge your students to make as many as they can. The recipe to make the sugar solutions is included for students to incorporate into their interactive lab notebooks.
Students love making layers!
