What educators are saying

This was a great activity. It worked well to introduce density while practicing measurement skills and data collection.
Missed the opportunity to use this lab this year, too many shared supplies at my school, but cannot wait to use it when we have more supplies and less COVID

Description

In this lab students will find the density of water at different volumes. They will learn that no matter the volume, the density of water will always be 1 g/mL.

Materials needed: triple beam balance (or electronic scale), graduated cylinder, beaker, water, ruler.

This lab is a must do before you do any other fun sink-or-float labs. Students must learn that the density of water is 1 g/mL before they can understand why objects sink or float in water. Students have to collect data, graph their data, and answer post-lab questions.
