My name is Heidi André and I've been teaching primary students for ten years. I love creating fun units and teaching them to my students!
COMMON CORE STANDARDS:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).
This unit teaches dental health while incorporating reading comprehension strategies. I find that teaching this subject (dental health) with the reading comprehension strategies is a great way to really engage the students and the results have shown me that they learn and understand more than when I didn’t use the strategies. The lessons are written so that they are simple, yet clear. They have just the right amount of detail so they are easy to understand but you do not have to read forever. They are short enough that you could print them out and use them as an (easy) reference.
I teach this unit once a year to my second graders. We do two to three lessons a week for three weeks. I schedule the unit so it ends right before we have our annual field trip to the local orthodontist’s office. They love it!
