This zip file contains many different activities (73 pages of student handouts including a worksheets, test, two lab activities as well as cloze notes handouts with an accompanying 55 slide PowerPoint which can be used to introduce students to basic concepts about Deposition and Constructional Forces. Some topics include stream, wind, and glacial deposition, plate tectonics, layers of the earth, some types of landforms (including types of mountains) and basic concepts involving the relative dating of rocks such as superposition, unconformities and intrusions. While these lessons were originally designed to correlate to the performance indicators of the New York State Intermediate Science curriculum, the components of this lesson may be easily used in other physical science or basic introductory earth science courses as well. The components this unit addresses in the NGSS Standards and Common Core Standards are indicated at the end of this description to assist you with your lesson planning.

MS-ESS2-1. Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.

MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales.

MS-ESS2-3. Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions.
