Ethics is a branch of philosophy. The ethics icon examines the difference between right and wrong or good and bad. It helps dig deeper as we look at things through an ethical lens.
Children are natural observes of what is right and wrong, at least through their eyes. It does not take toddlers long to express their feelings when they think they are being treated unfairly. Elementary students look at and follow rules for their homes, their classrooms, and their schools. We constantly teach our children things such as not taking things that don't belong to them and to always tell the truth. While we may not always label it, children face ethical decisions all of the time.
When we are talking about ethics, we look for right or wrong, good or bad, biases, values, beliefs, integrity, and judgements.
The Depth and Complexity icons were created by Sandra Kaplan and Bette Gould. The implementation of these icons allows differentiated learning where students can delve deeper and think more complexly about topics. Through the use of these icons, students can master topics. It is important to note that Depth and Complexity is not just for your higher level thinkers, but for all of your students.
