Depth and Complexity: Language of the Discipline
focuses on content specific vocabulary.
Every topic or subject has its own vocabulary. If you are talking about plants, you may use words such as botanist, stamen, and petals. If you are talking about dinosaurs, you may use words such as fossil, paleontologist, and pterodactyl. The words that we use with specific topics or subjects are referred to as the Language of the Discipline.
The Depth and Complexity icons were created by Sandra Kaplan and Bette Gould. The implementation of these icons allows differentiated learning where students can delve deeper and think more complexly about topics. Through the use of these icons, students can master topics. It is important to note that Depth and Complexity is not just for your higher level thinkers, but for all of your students.
