Using the appropriate cognitive rigor is essential for effectively implementing the Common Core State Standards. As referenced in the Common Core frameworks, Depth of Knowledge is often referred to as DOK. Depth of Knowledge is the complexity or depth of understanding required for the task at hand.
The following Depths of Knowledge are exemplified in the DOK posters in this packet.
~Level 1 Recall - Recall of a fact, information, or procedure.
~Level 2 Skill/Concept - Use information or conceptual knowledge, two or more steps, etc.
~Level 3 Strategic Thinking - Requires reasoning, developing plan or a sequence of steps, some complexity, more than one possible answer.
~Level 4 Extended Thinking - Requires an investigation, time to think and process multiple conditions of the problem.
Depths of Knowledge are applicable to all content areas and areas of study, from Mathematics to Science to Music. They allow you to effectively analyze the cognitive rigor of your lessons, activities, and assessments items. These posters were created for classroom display. They include an explanation poster for each Depth of Knowledge, as well as a poster with associated verbs for each Depth of Knowledge. The packet has a total of 9 posters and is ready for printing and posting in your classroom!
