Word Study notebook activity pages are meant to be a companion to Words their Way: Word Sorts for Derivational Relations Spellers (the blue book). I have created related activity pages for each of the 60 sorts. This free sneak peak includes the activities for Sorts 1 and 22.

Most of the sorts have multiple activity pages for students to complete. These activity pages are not your traditional spelling activities but scaffold students to go into deeper analysis of "word-studying" concepts.
Why I created these activity pages:
Students who fall into the Derivational Relations Spellers group can often spell the words provided in the sorts with much ease. Typically, these students also find it easy to quickly attain word meanings and spellings for new words.
I have found that my Derivational Relations Spellers need additional activities to help them analyze spellings, sound changes, and meanings of their word study words. The activities presented here could easily be discussed in small group lessons with the teacher, but are designed for independent exploration and reinforcement of concepts embedded in the Derivational Relations Spellers word study lists.
Based on the level of difficulty of the activity pages and how progressed your students are with being “independent thinkers,” you may choose to have them complete some of the sheets independently and save others for their small group meeting.
This word study resource is intended for teachers who use (or plan to use) Words Their Way word sorts. (The books are amazing for teachers who implement word study!)
