This Common Core reading lesson teaches students how to analyze text that compares and contrasts. The lesson includes research-based strategies and strategic questions that prepare students for Common Core assessments. In this lesson, students are given a text and a graphic organizer and they must determine what characteristics fit in each section of the graphic organizer. Students are taught to look for clue words that suggest comparison text structure such as: like, also, both, unlike, whereas, etc. This lesson provides students with a great foundation for writing informational comparison text. In addition to the lesson, there are four pages of independent practice with questions modeled after the Common Core assessment items.
