Through analyzing great character descriptions in literature, students will learn what literary elements authors use and how to use those same elements in their own writing. This PowerPoint presentation includes examples from literature and contemporary fiction. Students will study simile, metaphor, strong verb usage, hyperbole, showing not telling, foreshadowing, symbolism, and avoiding cliché. This PowerPoint presentation includes literary analysis, partner discussion, whole class and individual practice (on supplementary worksheet PDF), and a final assignment (a second supplementary worksheet PDF). This PowerPoint is suggested for use with middle or high school students. Overall the lesson should take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
