This can be used with students' Independent Reading Novels while practicing higher level thinking skills.
Students are challenged to Draw Conclusions and Make Inferences about author's craft, descriptive language, and figurative language. Then they are asked to explain the meaning and why the author has chosen to use this craft for this particular part of the novel or story.
The activity is broken down so that all students can achieve success applying these skills and over several weeks.
There are additional thinking prompts in the chart for responses to support differentiation.
The rubric is built in to each reading chart for quick and easy assessment and feedback to the students.
Note: Although the standards that are referenced are for 7th grade, they are easily converted to standards for 5th, 6th, and 8th grades.
