Description

Looking for a fun way to learn about and practice recognizing imagery and figurative language in literature? Then, check out these fun, colorful hands-on sorting mats. They contain 98 quotes from children's books that can be sorted by type of descriptive language. The following descriptive language techniques are included:

Imagery-Sound
Imagery-Sight
Imagery-Taste
Imagery-Smell
Imagery-Touch/Feel
Similes
Metaphors
Personification
Alliteration
Onomatopoeia
Hyperbole
Idioms (also includes definitions for the 10 idioms included for children to match)

Set out as many mats as you think your children can handle at one time with the corresponding cards and let them use their knowledge of descriptive language and their critical thinking skills to determine where each quote goes. Self-checking answer keys are included. And if your children need a little support, print the Descriptive Language Cheat Sheet at the end of the packet.

This activity can also be done as part of a teacher led group lesson for children who are still new to the various techniques.
