This is a really fun writing unit for Halloween or any other time of the year. Students learn how to write descriptively by using sensory details to create 5 paragraph monster description. Students illustrate their monster and have partner do the same. They really enjoy comparing the pictures to see how well they described their monsters.
The Unit Plan maps this unit out for 10 days (not including the awards activity). It can be done in less time if needed or extended by the awards activity. I have used this in alignment with the 2011 Reading Street program and it is common core aligned! (5.w.3)
This unit includes:
1. A Unit Plan
2. Descriptive Writing Anchor Chart
3. Sensory Detail Activity
4.Sensory Detail Vocabulary
5. Student Outline Pages
6. Illustration Pages
7. Student Checklist
8. Teacher Grading Sheet
9. 6 King Kong Award Certificates
My students loved getting to hear all of the monsters that were created. It was really fun to vote and choose the monsters for the King Kong Awards. The awards are a great activity to do on Halloween or another time too.
