Writing can be a very enjoyable experience for students. The more they know how to use words, the less students struggle to write.
Download the poster (enough for cooperative learning groups...four or five). Laminate and give each group one. Read and explain what descriptive writing is and how it impacts the interest of readers. Then read and explain directions, and ask students to work together to complete the assignment. Give students ample time to think of words that describe the photo.
When the assignment is complete, ask each group to share their descriptive words and sentences.
For homework, ask students to write a descriptive paragraph about their favorite movie, video game, vacation, friend........... Also, ask students to underline all descriptive words. Collect their assignment and provide feedback on their papers. Finally, select a few students to share their descriptive paragraphs.
