This is a fun and interactive lesson to get your students to see the importance of adding descriptive details to their writing. I usually use this lesson towards the beginning of my personal narrative unit. It's also a great writing activity to do around Halloween.
In this activity, students will read two paragraphs that describe a monster. The first paragraph is very bland, while the second uses lots of great adjectives and descriptions. Students are asked to draw a picture to match each paragraph.
Students then compare their pictures with those of other students. They will see that the first round of pictures are all very different since not much detail was given for them to work with. The second round of pictures should be much more similar since the reader could use all of the great details to visualize the monster.
Students are then asked to write their OWN monster paragraph. After the paragraphs are written, they will give them to a friend who will draw the monster. The students will be able to get immediate feedback about how well they described their monster by looking at how it was visualized by another reader. If you desire, students can then revise and edit these paragraphs to be used as a grade (rubric included).
